From SoHo, Red Market is a short ride north — the N, R or W from Prince Street to Union Square, or the 6 from Spring Street to 14th, then a block. Walking up Broadway takes about twenty minutes. We are on the second floor at 13 East 13th Street.
It is worth the few extra minutes for one reason: this is a color house rather than a blow-dry bar. SoHo has no shortage of places to get a fast style before an evening out. Fewer of them will build a formula, keep it on record, and paint it freehand so it still looks right four months later.
French technique, downtown
Owner and master colorist Reynald Ricard trained in France and brought French color technique from Paris to downtown Manhattan in the early 2000s. Balayage here is painted freehand — placed where the light would naturally lift the hair, left soft toward the root, so it grows out without a line.
