Styling chairs and mirrors along the wall at Red Market New York, Greenwich Village

A salon you can walk to, not one you commute to

Red Market is on the second floor at 13 East 13th Street, between Fifth Avenue and University Place — one block south of Union Square, which means every train that stops there is a short walk from the door: the 4/5/6, L and N/Q/R/W at Union Square, the F/M at 14th Street. Nobody plans an afternoon around getting here.

What that buys you is a salon built for regulars. Color is painted freehand rather than in foils, so it grows out without a hard line and the gap between visits stretches. Cuts are designed to hold their shape without twenty minutes of styling every morning. The appointment you book is the one you can keep as a habit.

What is on the menu, and what it costs

The menu is short and priced plainly. Women’s haircuts are $180, men’s are $140, a bang trim is $30 and a blow dry is $80. On the color side, a single process is $185, a gloss on its own is $95, and balayage starts at $350 including a personalized gloss. The Red Market Signature Balayage is $500 and folds the gloss, a deep restorative treatment, a luxury blowout and a take-home pigment shampoo into the same visit.

Those are the prices at checkout rather than an opening offer, and every color service begins with a complimentary consultation so the plan and the total are agreed before anything is mixed. If you are deciding between two services, say so when you book and the time is held for the longer one instead of being squeezed in afterwards.

Six artists, and the reason to pick one

A salon with a single senior colorist is a salon with a waiting list. Red Market runs six artists so the chair you want can actually be booked: Reynald Ricard, the owner and master colorist, for natural-looking blondes and precision cuts; Romain Perriniaux, co-owner, for cuts that grow out beautifully; Saudy Lara for seamless blondes, curls and vivids; Lea for color personalization; Mathilde Gaillard for dimensional blondes and balayage; Jeffrey Inawat for ladies’ cuts, men’s cuts and bang trims.

Four of the six are French or trained in France, which is why the color section reads the way it does. You are not choosing a salon and being assigned whoever is free — you choose the artist, and the booking names them.

Booking, and what the week looks like

The salon is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am until 8pm and Saturday from 9am to 7pm, and closed Sunday and Monday. Booking is online any time, and the confirmation names your service, your artist and the time that has been held. If you are hoping to be seen the same day, call the salon on (212) 929-9600 rather than waiting on an online reply.

Walk-ins are taken when the schedule allows, but color needs a booked chair — a balayage is a long appointment and cannot be fitted between two others. For a first visit, the safest shape is a consultation plus the service you came for, which is how the price stays honest.
