The Village’s French color house

Red Market sits on the second floor at 13 East 13th Street, just off Union Square and University Place — a few minutes from the 4/5/6, L, N/Q/R/W and F/M. It has been a downtown color house since the early 2000s, and balayage is the technique it built its name on.

Owner and master colorist Reynald Ricard trained in France and carried French color technique from Paris to downtown Manhattan. Every balayage here is painted freehand — no foils, no off-the-shelf formula — reading how the light actually falls on your hair and how you wear it, so the color looks sun-kissed rather than striped.

Color that grows out clean

The point of a proper balayage is what happens six weeks later. Because the highlights are hand-placed where the sun would naturally lift them, there is no hard regrowth line and no urgent root appointment — you get months between visits instead of weeks. That is what “low-maintenance” actually means, and it is why Village locals keep the chair.

Every color service opens with a complimentary consultation, so your colorist can see your hair in person, understand how much upkeep you want, and design the exact result before anyone picks up a brush.

What it costs

Balayage starts at $350 and includes a personalized gloss. The Red Market Signature Balayage — hand-painted balayage with a custom gloss, a deep restorative treatment, a luxury blowout, and a take-home pigment shampoo — is $500. Partial balayage, single-process color, and combined root-plus-balayage services are all on the full menu.
